The Linksys WCF12 wireless 802.11b compact flash adapter is a nice piece of hardware to use with your PocketPC. However, it's a bit expensive to use it only with your PocketPC. Wouldn't it be great to use it with your laptop also, using a CF to PCMCIA (PCCard) converter?

The LinkSys WCF12 in a Sandisk PCMCIA converter

The workaround
Yes, of course it would! But at the time Linksys doesn't provide Windows drivers. Luckily I found this message in Google Groups:

Subject: Solution: Wireless CF Card WCF12 on Windows 98 SE Laptop
Newsgroups: microsoft.public.pocketpc.wireless

Windows 98 Solution: I too wanted to use my Linksys Compact Flash WCF12 wireless NIC in my laptop using a SanDisk pcmcia/cf adapter, as well as use on my Ipaq 3650 pocketpc. Being as cheap as I am, I still run Windows 98 SE on the laptop. If you use any of the above mentioned drivers (I have tried them all), Windows 98 will not "see" it and you cannot install. Here's how I got it to work, thanks to the other postings in this group:

WCF12 CF Card on Laptop running Windows 98 SE:

- Boot your laptop to Windows
- download the D-Link wk650 driver files from www.d-link.com and unzip them into a directory on your harddrive
- also download the Z-com 815 generic driver from www.zcom.com.tw, as we will only use the wireless setup utility found in here.
- Put the cf card in the adapter and put the adapter in one of your pcmcia slots on your laptop
- Windows should prompt you to install a driver; Point windows to the D-Link 650 driver downloaded above.
- Windows will not show any available drivers. This is okay for now. Hit next next finish etc..
- Go to your start menu / Programs/ Accessories / System Tools/ System Information - if you do not have this tool, you will need to add this
component from your windows 98 cd.
- Once in system tools, go to COmponents, problem devices. You should see your CF card there.
- Look for string similar or identical to: PCMCIA\LINKSYS-WIRELESS_COMPACTFLASH_CARD-311E and copy this section without the /0 at the end.
- Navigate to where you installed the d-link wk650 drivers and edit the wlannic.inf file with notepad.
- locate the line similar to:

%WLAN_PCMCIA1_STR% = WLAN_PCMCIA1, PCMCIA\D-Link-DCF-650W-1986

and append the string above using comma separation, as in:

%WLAN_PCMCIA1_STR% = WLAN_PCMCIA1, PCMCIA\D-Link-DCF-650W-1986,PCMCIA\LINKSYS-WIRELESS_COMPACTFLASH_CARD-311E

- Save this file over the old one. Backup original if you care.
- Go to device manager, (right click my computer, properties) and locate the problem NIC card. Remove the device. Then refresh. Again, point windows to the d-link driver. THis time windows should show a valid driver in the list and select it.
- the NIC card is now installed in windows 98
- Go the the utility directory of where you d/led the z-com driver and run the setup program so you can configure your card to use encryption (WEP)
- You should now have a little wireless icon in your system tray. CLick on this guy and set up your 128 bit WEP incryption to match your
router.
- SOme have claimed the WEP encryption does not work, but it does in this case. 64 and 128 bit, or none if you're insane.

Off topic notes about wcf12 on Ipaq 3650:
- cannot get DHCP to work on ipaq as so many others have reported. Had to hard code the IP, not a big deal though since I don't roam to other networks yet.

Note about this post: If time is money, and new PCMCIA wireless cards are cheap, then I definitely blew the budget here, but at least you don't have to now! Thanks to all that posted in this group.

The LinkSys WCF12 in a laptop, using a Sandisk PCMCIA converter

Unfortunately I have Windows2000 on my laptop, but I used the same technique to make the D-Link WK650 NT/2K/XP drivers work with my LinkSys WCF12. I downloaded the driver at www.D-link.com and changed the wlannic.inf file (bold):

[DeviceList]
%WLAN_PCMCIA1_STR% = WLAN_PCMCIA1, PCMCIA\D-Link-DCF-650W-1986,PCMCIA\LINKSYS-WIRELESS_COMPACTFLASH_CARD-311E,PCMCIA\LINKSYS-WIRELESS_COMPACTFLASH_CARD

%WLAN_PCMCIA2_STR% = WLAN_PCMCIA2, PCMCIA\D-Link-DCF-650W-0000,PCMCIA\LINKSYS-WIRELESS_COMPACTFLASH_CARD-311E,PCMCIA\LINKSYS-WIRELESS_COMPACTFLASH_CARD,PCMCIA\LINKSYS-WIRELESS_COMPACTFLASH_CARD_0000

The driver can now be installed for the LinkSys WCF12. To configure WEP-settings I downloaded D-Link's PCCard Utility.

The D-link PCCard Utility

The D-Link utility has some cosmetic issues when filling in a WEP passphrase, but otherwise it works perfectly.

I also found that the WCF11 should work, according to this message in the newsgroups.

I sent an email to linksys about the xp drivers for WCF12 and they replied that they don't provide at this moment. But I downloaded WPC11 Instant wireless Network adaptor Version 3.0 drivers and unzipped them into a forlder. My notebook runs on XP pro, when I inserted the WCF12 through an PCMCIA adaptor, XP pro detected it. I choosed don't search, I will specify , then select Network adaptor and click on have a disk. Point it to the folder where you unzipped the drivers and it will shows list of drivers and there is a signed driver for CF card on the top. Even though it doesn't specify as wcf12, it worked perfectly for me. XP will give you warnings that the drivers may not be compatible with the hardware, just ignore them.
